Best Friend Speaks Out About Death of Navy SEAL Glen Doherty

Brandon Webb sheds light on the life of the Encinitas SEAL who was killed in Libya.

Encinitas security contractor and former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty was killed alongside three other Americans in Libya Sept. 12 while trying to save the U.S. consulate staff. During a memorial service for the victims, President Barak Obama said Doherty “served with distinction” and “he laid down his life, loyal as always, protecting his friends.”

Perhaps nobody can attest to Doherty’s caliber of service more than his best friend Brandon Webb, who served with him as a Navy SEAL. In a letter published in The New York Times, he sheds light on the man Doherty was, remembering their “crazy flying adventures,” assuring him the annual deep sea fishing trips would continue in his memory, and promising to honor his wishes and celebrate his life by “throwing the biggest eff-ing party we can.” Webb also thanked his best friend for fighting “like a hero” and said he was a better person for having known Doherty.

Doherty and Webb were sniper students together and recently collaborated on a book, “Navy Seal Sniper: An Intimate Look at the Sniper of the 21st Century,” which is due out this winter. According to its foreword, the authors take the reader inside the mind of a modern sniper, a master of his craft who must “utilize tools, training, and creativity simultaneously to deliver devastating psychological impact upon the battlefield.” The book also includes tips for marksmen hoping to improve their shot, covering everything from “trajectories and wind speed to camouflage and best vantage points and targets.” Navy Seal Sniper should be in local book stores by January.
