Encinitas Patch Week in Review

Taking a look back at the week of Nov. 14, just in case you missed something.

This week, Encinitas Patch attended the General Plan Update workshop, profiled a local artist making a splash in the soccer community, reviewed Intrepid Theater's team effort in The Crucible, discussed the issues facing seniors in the community and more.

PASSPORT Soccer owner Edgar D. Acevedo gets more than a kick out of soccer—he puts his art on it. A video game designer by day, Acevedo launched his company website in June with 1,500 soccer balls printed with designs by himself or artists George Davis or Monica Boluto. Each design is on a limited amount of balls and each ball comes with a matching bag and limited edition certificate.

One year into a two-year planning process for the General Plan Update, urban planners are finding that it's not so much what to change, but what not to change in Encinitas. While many residents strive to keep their community the same, the city is required to take a critical look at future land use as well as policy issues like changes in the economy, environment, housing and transportation.

Encinitas is full of great places for you and your dog—we just named the top six.

The Intrepid Shakespeare Company has teamed up with Moxie Theatre to present the Arthur Miller classic The Crucible. Theater critic Pat Launer likens the tale to our present state: "Once again, intolerance has reared its ugly head in America, paranoia and group hysteria have distorted reality and dehumanized whole swaths of the populace (gays, liberals, immigrants)," she writes.

The Senior Commission recently delivered a presentation to the City Council on a research project they conducted to explore the issues facing local seniors. The commission asked focus groups and Senior Fair attendees what was on their minds—and found out that transportation and health care top the list of local concerns. Solutions are not in place yet, but the research was considered a first step in making Encinitas a better place to live for older residents.

Encinitas food writer Jayne Jang Belz recently discovered the 'shroom Shack at the Leucadia/Encinitas Farmers Market. The Shack features several varieties of mushrooms, including the lobster mushroom, a red and orange mushroom with the same taste and texture as the seafood.
