PHOTOS: Occupy North County Demonstration in Encinitas

Citizens protest corporate greed and call on government to create jobs.

Shouts of "We are the 99 percent!" "Banks got bailed out, we got sold out!" and "Not Wall Street, all streets!" were heard Saturday afternoon on Coast Highway 101, near Encinitas Boulevard.

About 300 residents gathered there for a demonstration organized by a newly formed group that was inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City. After starting on the East Coast about a month ago, the grassroots movement has rippled across the nation, and is now spreading into Europe and Asia.

Protesters in Encinitas said Saturday's demonstration was in response to what they feel is rampant corporate greed and a faltering economy. Protesters were also calling on Congress to pass President Obama's jobs bill. They also expressed anger over a recent Supreme Court decision that allows corporations to give unlimited and undisclosed amounts of money to campaigns and candidates.

The Encinitas demonstration appeared successful and peaceful as passing cars honked in support, and deputies visited only briefly at the start of the protest to make sure protestors stayed on the sidewalk and clear of traffic and crosswalks.
