Sneak Peek Inside Dos Palmas Panaderia and Grill

Pan dulce aplenty is coming to Leucadia.

You’ll soon be able to get some pan dulce with that morning coffee in Leucadia. The Dos Palmas Panaderia and Grill is slated to open this Saturday, fittingly, on Cinco de Mayo.

Owner Mario Anguiano lives in the neighborhood and says simple childhood memories inspired him to open the panaderia.

“I grew up in Mexico City, and every afternoon my mother would come home from the neighborhood panaderia with fresh baked pan dulce and loaf of bread,” he recalls. “I can still remember how good that smelled.”

After working many years in restaurant kitchens, Anguiano went to culinary school to become a pastry chef. He’ll put that knowledge to use in his own kitchen, creating pan dulce classics, like empanadas (sweet turnovers filled with fruit or cream) and marranitos (dense gingerbread cookies shaped like pigs). You’ll also find some American-mainstream breakfast pastries, like cinnamon rolls and Danishes. There will also be cakes, which you can eventually custom order for special occasions.

Anguiano has also hired pastry chef Alexis Saludares to be in charge of artisan breads. You can expect daily baked loafs, rolls, baguettes and croissants.

“We also plan to tailor our menu to what the community wants,” Anguiano adds. “We plan to experiment with gluten-free items and offer organic options, too.”

If you’re looking for a heartier meal, the menu will also include traditional Mexican breakfast fare, like huevos rancheros, burritos and chilaquiles. Lunchtime offerings include tortas, tacos and caldos. Tamales will also likely be added to the menu.

Anguiano will run the restaurant with his wife Jennifer and stresses this is very much a local family-owned operation.

“That’s very important to us, and we’ve very excited to be in this community,” Anguiano says.

Dos Palmas Panaderia and Grill is located at 1302 N. Coast Highway 101. It will be open every day from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information visit dospalmaspanaderiaandgrill.com.
