Update: Encinitas-Based Nonprofit Expands Efforts in Cambodia

Microloans for Mothers will also host a happy hour today to support its growing operations.

Microloans for Mothers, an Encinitas-based nonprofit that uses micro-lending to help Cambodian women escape poverty by becoming entrepreneurs, recently expanded its efforts.

The group, which Encinitas Patch , launched about a year ago — and in that time has gone from helping five women to helping 45 women. This month Microloans for Mothers opened a new facility in Cambodia so it can help even more women, the majority of whom are single mothers surviving off about $2 a day. A $100 mico-loan, however, can and has changed the lives of these Cambodian women.

“It's been a real inspiration to see this growth,” said executive director Niels Lund in a written statement, who is also a Cardiff resident of 25 years. “The expansion continues in Cambodia, but also locally here in San Diego County. We're doing well, so a little celebration is in order.”

Some of that celebration will kickoff today in Encinitas with MicoBrew 4 MicroLoans, the group’s monthly happy hour. If you’d like to attend, head over to today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The group hosts its happy hour events the first Tuesday of every month.
