Encinitas Patch Week in Review

Taking a look back at the week of April 24, just in case you missed something.

This week, Encinitas Patch attended a six-hour council meeting, checked out what’s blooming at a local greenhouse, put on a search for hometown bloggers and more.

The Encinitas City Council voted Wednesday to oppose , a piece of legislation that could slow the Interstate 5 expansion by requiring local street projects to be built before highway widening in the coastal zone. Mayor James Bond, Deputy Mayor Jerome Stocks and Councilwoman Kristin Gaspar voted in favor of sending a letter from the council voicing their opposition. Councilwomen Teresa Barth and Maggie Houlihan voted against the notion.

Encinitas officials have not made any plans yet for the city’s newest piece of public artwork, which many are calling the “.”  The unauthorized stained-glass mosaic—which shows Our Lady of Guadalupe on a surfboard and reads, “Save the Ocean”—was installed below the railroad overpass on Encinitas Boulevard just before Easter.  The artists remain unknown.

When you hand your mom that bouquet of flowers on May 8, don’t be surprised if they were grown right here in Encinitas, courtesy of Dramm & Echter.  Patch took a look around the local greenhouse this week to see .

Joseph Ricardo Fernandez, who is accused of causing the hit-and-run death of Encino cyclist James Steven Swarzman, pleaded Wednesday.  Fernandez faces up to four years in prison if convicted.  He will be back in court May 5 for a readiness conference and May 10 for a preliminary hearing.
