Encinitas Patch Week in Review

Taking a look back at the week of June 5, just in case you missed something.

This week, Encinitas Patch revealed the identity of the Surfing Madonna artist, checked out Leucadia market Just Peachy, took a look into the life of councilwoman Maggie Houlihan and more.

The artist responsible for the —an unauthorized mosaic attached to the Encinitas Boulevard rail underpass—has identified himself as 58-year-old Leucadia resident Mark Patterson.  It was announced on Wednesday that city administrative and legal representatives are in discussions with Patterson’s attorney.

Sharing a bed with baby, known as , is controversial in the United States.  Some regard the practice as dangerous, claiming that placing babies to sleep in adult beds puts them at risk of suffocation or strangulation, while other argue that it encourages breastfeeding and allows infants to fall asleep more easily.  Our local Moms Council has weighed in—what do you think?

A council member since 2000, announced mid-May that she would not elect chemotherapy to treat her endometrial cancer—and that she would not let the disease detract from her work in Encinitas.  Houlihan has been battling the cancer since 2006, and this time, the prognosis is not good.

, who made headlines throughout his life for his stance on assisted suicide, died June 3, 2011 in Royal Oak, Michigan.  One of Kevorkian’s patients, Martha Ruwart, was from Cardiff by the Sea and suffered intestinal and ovarian cancer before he helped her to die in 1993.
