Gateway Park Fundraising Effort Launched

San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy is calling on the community to help keep the land protected from development.

A couple of weeks ago the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy (SELC) , commonly called the Gateway Park, which is off Coast Highway across from Cardiff State Beach.

Developers have long been eyeing the 3.44-acre plot with hopes of building projects there — but SELC’s purchase puts all those possibilities to bed. Keeping with its core mission, the SELC plans to preserve the land, and restore the natural vegetation in hopes of creating a habitat for wildlife.

Once SELC learned that the property was on the market, it had to quickly come up with the $3.75 million to buy it — something that was possible thanks to some individuals who agreed to loan the money. Now SELC is launching a community-wide fundraising effort so it can pay back its loan.
