Get Kooky This Weekend

The first annual Cardiff Kook Run is this Sunday.

This weekend, Cardiff is encouraging you to release your inner kook and run with it.

The first annual , which was thought of by two local runners Steve Lebherz and Seth Brewer, is this Sunday, Feb. 5 and it’s the craziest running event to hit San Diego. The event consists of both a 10K and a 5K, which are suitable for the experienced runner and the novices.

Athletes can come in their running shoes and crazy costumes to show off their Cardiff Kook spirit. The kookiest costume of them all will win a prize, as will the second and third place.

The 10K race starts and finishes at Moonlight Beach, heading south through old downtown Encinitas, past Swami's and on down to Cardiff State Beach and then back again. It’s a great way to spend the morning of the Super Bowl (you can justify your game-time snacks with this fun!). Fruit and water stations will be provided along the route for runners. Click here for a map of the 10K routes.

The 5K race starts at Moonlight Beach, heads south through old downtown Encinitas, past Swami's and will turn around in Pipe's Parking lot. Fruit and water stations will also be provided and you can click here for the map. The 5K turn around will be north of the “Cardiff Kook” so runners won’t have to cross the train tracks or traffic.

The Cardiff Kook Run proceeds will go back to Cardiff-by-the-Sea and will help with park-related funding, P.E. programs at Cardiff Elementary and other community needs.

Hit the alarm clock and stretch those legs Sunday morning. Check in is at 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 5. The 10K starts at 8:30 a.m. Those running the 5K and in costumes will start at 9 a.m. The awards ceremony will be at 11 a.m.

Click here to register. The 10K is $40 and the 5K is $30. Al race participants will receive a goody bag once they’ve finished, filled with a Cardiff Kook shirt, medal and some special treats. The Cardiff Seaside Market will be providing water, fruit and bagels to the runners to refuel after the race.

Good luck, get kooky and have fun!
