Help Plant a Garden for Encinitas Children This Weekend

Lend a hand at Ocean Knoll Elementary Saturday morning.

Roll up those sleeves and get ready to get your hands dirty this weekend.

The garden at Ocean Knoll is being expanded and the community is invited to pitch-in and help build garden beds and plant crops Saturday morning.

The school, thanks to the Encinitas Union School District, was given an expanded area of land to use for gardening needs. The gardens will be maintained by students and used for healthy lunches at the school.

Volunteers can meet at the school at 9 a.m. to get started and kids can join in the fun at 10:30 a.m. The garden lot is located by the back lot of Ocean Knoll above the canyon.

The Solana Center is sponsoring the first two garden beds, which will hold fruit trees and contain straw wattle. Anyone who is interested can come lean about straw wattle, which are tubes of rice straw used for erosion control, sediment control and storm water runoff control. They’re especially helpful on sloped ground.
