Leader No. 2: Mallory Watson Helping Conserve Something People Love

30 Under 30 San Diego County leader is community engagement coordinator at San Diego Coastkeeper.

Mallory Watson is new to San Diego, but she's already making her mark in America's Finest City.

Watson, 26, is the community engagement coordinator at San Diego Coastkeeper. With a master's of science in marine affairs and policy, Watson said she was "raised with an understanding that our water was our greatest resource and it was our job to protect it."

"I knew when I was in third grade I wanted to work in marine science and that I wanted a job someday that would help conserve something so many people love," she said.

"I’ve had the chance to work in marine mammal research, ecology field work, water quality labs and as a science teacher. As different as each position was, it was evident how important public education and effective science communication is across the board. I’ve always wanted to make scientific issues relatable to people and show our communities the impacts of individual actions."

Watson said she's inspired and humbled to be around the nearly 300 volunteers at the Coastkeeper.

Advice for young people:

"It’s OK to change your mind and have different career goals as you get older. But whatever you’re passionate about right now, go for it. Be persistent if you truly care about something. Whether it’s an internship or you’re paid or even if you’re just volunteering, get the most you can out of it. It’s amazing what kind of connections you can build now that will help you down the road."
