Leader No. 30: Austin Harvell Gets a Healthy Start to Civic Involvement

The 15-year-old volunteers on a Lemon Grove HEAL Zone committee and with several nonprofits.

Austin Harvell is serving on a committee working to bring healthy changes to Lemon Grove, and volunteers at the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post, his alma mater Vista La Mesa Academy and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park.

Not bad for a 15-year-old.

Austin, who attends Helix Charter High School, is on the steering committee for the HEAL Zone (for Healthy Eating Acting Living) in Lemon Grove.

On top of that, Austin plays water polo and performs in a band.

He said “any adult that is successful inspires me to strive for success” and hopes to graduate at the top of his class before attending a high-ranking university.

Advice for young people:

“Due to my age, I am sure that I should be taking more advice than giving it out. Though I have limited world experience, my advice to young leaders would be always try your best, strive to be better, and always think of others. Additionally, consistently take the initiative to make your community better in many different ways.”
