Locals Only: Peter Pupping

Guitarist makes sweet music in Encinitas.

If life in Encinitas came with a soundtrack, Peter Pupping would be prominently featured on it. His roots are in classical guitar — he’s a former director of the guitar program at — and his music explores genres such as Spanish guitar, Latin jazz, contemporary acoustic, and instrumental rock. With his band, the , he performs regularly at Ki’s and WineStyles, as well as at special events, such as a Dec. 9 Christmas concert with singer Tim Holcombe. He also has recorded several albums with his band, as a soloist, and in duos with other musicians. A 30-year resident of Encinitas, he tells us a few of his favorite things about living here.

Local spots that inspire him artistically: Swami's, the entire coastal area.

Ideal Encinitas day: Sunny, warm, clear, great ocean view with my kids at the beach.

Favorite civic organizations:

Favorite local business:

Favorite Encinitas event: Woodie car festival.

Best thing about living in Encinitas: It's a great family town. I love the atmosphere of well- being with our health food restaurants and many activities that promote positive living.

The one thing he’d change about the city: I just hope we keep it a beachy town and not give in too much to the citified feel.

A place in Encinitas more locals should visit: . They’ve been around forever and I hate to see similar chain stores in town take away their business.

How would you dress up the Cadiff Kook: Truth is, I can see how it's fun but I often feel for the artist. I wonder if it hurts him when there’s ridicule. Although, I have to say, I've often been entertained by the creative getups. I’d say if I had to choose I’d like to see him with a guitar.

Best place in the city to watch the sun set: Top of Santa Fe Drive as the ocean comes into view with Swami's in the foreground.

The Christmas Concert featuring The Peter Pupping Quartet with Tim Holcombe, plus the John Clauder drum circle performing “Little Drummer Boy,” starts at 8 p.m. Dec. 9 at Pacific View Baptist Church, 845 Santa Fe Drive. $15 donation at the door. Guitarsounds.com.
