Timeless Christmas Favorite Has Roots in Encinitas

Listen to Encinintas resident Hugh Martin discuss writing the holiday classic "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."

When the movie "Meet Me in St. Louis" was released in 1944, it featured the tender debut of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," sung by Judy Garland. The song, written by Downtown Encinitas resident Hugh Martin, touched a chord among Americans during the dark days of World War II and has been a classic ever since.

Martin also wrote the music for "The Encinitas Song," with words penned by Ida Lou Coley, a beloved local historian that passed away in 2005.
