Organizers are hoping to raise $100,000 this year for the Encinitas community by selling bricks under the Surfing Madonna mosaic along Encinitas Boulevard.
Surfing Madonna Oceans Project director of operations Bob Nichols wants to create a "Zen like" park space around the stained glass Surfing Madonna, which first appeared on city-owned property three years ago. The art piece has since moved across the street to private property.
Nichols' organization began selling bricks that will go under the mosaic as a fundraiser. The bricks can be customized with names and messages. Each brick costs $150.

"This was a gift to the community – the Surfing Madonna – and so we need to let the community make a decision on where proceeds raised from the Madonna goes," Nichols told 10 News.
