Environmental Art on Display at Encinitas Library

Twenty-four recycled art totems will remain on display through January.

Totem poles made from recycled materials were recently put on display in front of the . The temporary public art exhibit, which was approved by city council last month, features 24 artworks created by Encinitas children and adults at the Encinitas Environment Day (EE Day) held on June 5 at Cottonwood Creek Park.

With help from Leucadia artist Rodney McCoubrey and Solana Center’s EE Day committee member Mim Michelove, residents created recycled art totems using trash from beach cleanups, broken toys, and a variety of basic discards. The brightly colored totems were placed on repurposed rebar from the Solana Center’s old sound wall, which was recently removed to make way for an expanded gardening program.

The recycled art totems are available for purchase by emailing Sandy Atkinson, executive director of Solana Center. This is the third year that an exhibit has resulted from local trash clean ups and workshops held during EE Day. The current exhibit will remain on view at the library until Jan. 31.
