MiraCosta Still Offering Lunar New Year Events Through Chinese Club

Don't miss out on the Chinese New Year events being held at MiraCosta Feb. 10 and 11.

The Lunar—or Chinese—New Year is a holiday for families to come together, honor their ancestors and enjoy copious amounts of food. Asian women put on their best holiday dresses, colorful dragons perform on streets and ornate, red envelopes carrying money are handed out to children.

If you haven’t had time to celebrate this momentous holiday, MiraCosta’s Chinese Club is still offering several events to usher in the Year of the Rabbit.

According to organization's advisor, Aubrey Kuan Roderick, the Chinese Club was first organized by the students of the Chinese 101 class in Fall 2006.

“The club has been promoting Chinese language and culture to the MiraCosta College and the North County communities,” Roderick said. “Currently, it has about 50 active members including students who are studying Chinese at MiraCosta College as well as students from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong who are pursuing academic degrees at MiraCosta College.”

Last week, the club had a full schedule with a flurry of events ranging from Asian Story Theatres to Alternative Healing fairs. The club offered lessons on how to make Chinese lanterns for children an held an authentic Chinese dumpling workshop.
