Adopt-A-Stairway project underway to repair and preserve San Elijo and Carlsbad beach stairways

The tall, bluffside stairways at San Elijo State Beach in Cardiff and South Carlsbad State Beach provide key beach access points for local residents and campers. Millions of people each year use these 9 stairways to surf, walk the beach, exercise and take in views. However, the stairways have fallen into disrepair and have not been fully renovated since they were built in the 1960s. Something needed to be done.

Through the volunteer membership of the Friends of Cardiff & Carlsbad State Beaches (FCCSB), our non-profit group has found a practical solution to make substantial repairs to these stairways. We have launched an Adopt-A-Stairway program that has already attracted donors and the repairs are already underway. Please help complete this project. Donations are being accepted in cash, materials or labor.

With the Coastal Commission rules these days, if a storm destroys one of these stairways, it may not be able to be rebuilt and could be lost forever. Some stairways have already been destroyed over the years and may never be rebuilt. This Adopt-A-Stairway program will ensure that the 9 remaining stairways at South Carlsbad and San Elijo State Beaches are repaired and preserved for future generations.
