Give the Gift of Sound this Holiday Season!

DECEMBER 2013, SAN DIEGO, CA-- Hearing loss is a major public health issue that is the third most common physical condition after arthritis and heart disease. About 20 percent, over 48 million Americans suffer from hearing loss (that’s over 4 times the amount of people living in NYC!).

An invisible condition; we cannot see hearing loss, only its effects. Hearing loss may be attributed to things like aloofness, confusion, and personality changes. Although most hearing loss is permanent, an expert can determine one’s hearing loss level and the best treatment, which may include hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and/or hearing rehabilitation. One of the first stages of hearing loss is denial. On average people wait seven years to treat their hearing loss due to vanity issues, expense concerns, and/or overall hearing loss denial. Cases of untreated hearing loss can lead to other health issues such as anxiety, depression, isolation, decreased job performance, dementia, and overall diminished health.

Although hearing problems are commonly associated with the normal aging process, more than half of all hearing-impaired persons are younger than 65. With the increased use of personal music players (MP3s) and earbuds, the number of Americans experiencing hearing loss at a younger age is growing. One in three develop their hearing loss as a result of exposure to noise. Anyone that has attended a concert, sporting event, fireworks show, or used a lawnmower or custom car stereo at high volumes should get their hearing checked. And, the good new is that there are many ways to prevent hearing loss and when needed, hearing tests are simple and sometimes free - as they are at Miracle Ear North County San Diego locations!
