Miracle Ear educates at Buena Vista Elementary's Science Day

On Friday, January 17, 2014, students at Buena Vista Elementary celebrated Science Day 2014 with hands-on activities, labs, experiments, and a school-wide assembly. One new feature at this year’s event was Miracle Ear North County San Diego teaching the children about their ears and hearing.

Once a year local elementary, middle, and high schools throughout California celebrate all things science during "Science Day". This year’s Day proved that things like molecules, the human body, and chemistry are nothing short of cool and exciting to learn about. Buena Vista Elementary in Carlsbad, CA, has hosted the event for at least 10 years. This year's Science Day took place on Friday, January 17, 2014.

The Kindergarten through fifth grade classes rotated classrooms doing a different educational science activity, experiment, or lab with each teacher. Miracle Ear North County San Diego* taught the children about their ears, what ears look like on the inside and how ears and hearing work. They also provided complimentary hearing screenings 9and continue to offer free screenings for local residents this Winer 2014).

These extraordinary organs, our ears, are often overlooked when studying other body parts. Once the students understood the three small inner-ear bones that move to allow the hearing of different sound vibrations, they were really excited to see the inside of their ears with Miracle Ear’s video otoscope. Local hearing experts, John and Toni Merrill, also the Owners of three Miracle Ear San Diego North locations, wanted the children to leave Science Day with a new-found appreciation for their hard working ears!

In addition to the grade level activity rotations, Splash Lab, a Science Outreach Program with the San Diego County Office of Education Outdoor Education Department worked with the fourth and fifth grade teams. This year and the past couple of years students have also enjoyed a school-wide assembly featuring Mad Science. The children really enjoy this hands-on education.
