El Torito in Encinitas Suddenly Closed

The Mexican restaurant at Encinitas Town Center took down all signage and left an announcement above the door saying the location has closed.

El Torito has closed its Encinitas location at 1068 N El Camino Real, in the Encinitas Town Center shopping complex.

A sign posted there now reads, "We have closed this location and apologize for any inconvenience. We hope you continue to visit us at one of our other restaurant locations."

Anyone who still wants their El Torito fix — including its popular $3 happy hour — will have to drive to the nearest location in Oceanside.

El Torito, part of a nationwide conglomerate had several problems in New Encinitas: first, they looked at the 41,000 car trips a day past the corner of Encinitas Ranch Town Center and mistakenly translated that into potential customers. This is a common mistake. The New Encinitas Network met with a dozen regional vice presidents in logistics and marketing for El Torito and asked what could be done about the 'signage' and their lunch business. 1) Encinitas has one of the most difficult group of 'signage' ordinances in the U.S. and while this is understandable from an aesthetic perspective, some Encinitas business owners have pursued their rights in court, like the Encinitas Country Day School, and the higher courts have found that parts of the local sign ordinances are unconstitutional and sided with the clients. Of course, who has the time and money to fight it out in court while the property owner is expecting their rent? 2) 90% of full-time working Encinitas adults that work 40 hours a week or more work OUTSIDE of Encinitas. We are a classic bedroom community; no manufacturing base; period. This means there really is no 'Lunch Crowd' for a large footprint restaurant like El Torito. El Torito's corporation came to the conclusion that they were throwing good money after bad. We will miss El Torito in New Encinitas; but there are our personal favorites; the flautas at Ricos Tacos and the Carnitas Tacos at Chronic Tacos.

I am mostly sorry for all the people who were employed by El Torito in Encinitas & secondly for the people who will miss the servers they had come to like. But did anyone mention that maybe the reason the restaurant closed is because the food totally sucks and know nothing about real Mexican food?? The last time I ate a an El Torito, for some get together, I swore that I could probably do better with a Van De Camps frozen dinner. I know I am not the only one who feels this way. I am sorry for the job losses, but good riddance to this corporate conglomerate restaurant with no real local ties, and no real commitment to serve quality food.

After reading Mr Andreen's post it seems to me that he may have reversed the order of El Torito' s problems.I understand that he is the advocate for business (sing business perhaps) but that location has always had problems and in the current economic situation I would like to see the sing that was going to turn that business around.
