Introducing New Editor of Encinitas Patch, Fresh from Marine Beat

Award-winning journalist Daniel Woolfolk succeeds Marlena Medford, who gains new Patch role.

It’s often said the one constant in life is change, and that’s certainly held true in Encinitas lately. This week voters ushered in new councilmembers, and after an 18-year wait, elected a new county supervisor.

Even the weather is changing as autumn makes a late but welcomed appearance. And things are changing at Encinitas Patch, too.

As Patch continues to improve and expand, I’ll be taking on a new regional role that allows me to focus on engaging more readers, a facet of my job I love. And Patch isn’t all that’s improving and expanding.

As many of you may already know, my husband and I will be welcoming our first baby this spring, right here in Encinitas. We’ve sprouted new roots in this town, and I’m happy to say you’ll still see me out and about—just likely with a little girl in tow. And because I’ll still be a big part of the Patch team, you can rest assured I’m more invested in covering this community than ever.

Today I’m handing the reins over to Daniel Woolfolk, who you may know as the editor of Camp Pendleton Patch. He, like me and many of you, has had fallen in love with Encinitas. He moved to North County from the East Coast and it wasn’t long until he was slipping down to Encinitas a few times a week to grab a bite downtown or enjoy our beautiful coastline.

He couldn’t resist its magnetic charm, and who among us could blame him? Daniel will soon be moving to Encinitas, and I hope you’ll join me in making him feel like a local.

Though it’s bittersweet for me to end my time as editor of Encinitas Patch, I take a lot of comfort in knowing I’m leaving the 2-year-old site in good hands.

Daniel would never toot his horn, so allow me: He earned his graduate degree at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, where he was a Pulitzer-Moore fellow and intern for Lens, the photojournalism blog of The New York Times.

He took over Camp Pendleton Patch last year, and his reporting recently earned him three awards from the San Diego Press Club. Daniel also served in the US Army as a Cavalry Scout and deployed to Kosovo and Iraq as a reconnaissance machine gunner. He’s studied Arabic and German, and he’s fluent in Spanish.

I encourage you to contact Daniel, or better yet, invite him out for a cup of coffee or to your next community event. You can reach Daniel at daniel.woolfolk@patch.com or 760-237-0204.

The public deserves an objective, unemotional, factual public debate on this proposition. So far IRead More am still leaning toward a yes vote, but I am keeping an open mind at least through this month.

'Batman' already mentioned the main inequality; Women have the grand privilege of choice for bearingRead More children. No matter how bad a man wants to become a father, it's up to some woman to decide to provide a child for him. Traditionally in our society, men are obligated to pay for dating and are expected to afford to provide for the family as women seek this economic stability in men, and will often dismiss a lesser paid man as a potential mate. Perhaps when most women are paying for everything or contributing equally while first dating, and continued into the relationship or when raising a family after marriage, then economic equalities will become more important.

Of course women don't have the same standing as men, they don't have the same hardware either. ButRead More they do have considerably more responsibility in our society. They are the ones who have the responsibilty and the honor of bringing new life into the world. And caring for and nurturing the babies and small children. Men can't do this, no matter how hard they try to act like women. Can you imagine a fella giving birth? Believe me, a fella couldn't take it. Can you imagine a fella breast feeding a baby? You have got to be kidding! Can you just imagine the jacked-up mess we'd be in if men had to do all this by themselves? We'd be extinct by now that's for sure!

Well said, Nama. I was speechless to see how many people Uncle Ben had influenced during his life,Read More but it's no wonder. There may be one less Ben Taylor in our lives, but Heaven just got a whole lot more fun!

Thanks, Kyle for posting this. I'm not sure how things were in the past, but as a Patch editor, I'veRead More seen that blogging and engaging readers directly is a great way to market a book. Steve Repak, a financial planner with a military-themed personal finance book, blogs regularly on Patch and has recently been featured in National Media. Here's that story: http://oceanside-camppendleton.patch.com/articles/steve-repak-featured-on-npr-fox-friends
