Southwest Airlines Adds Nonstop Flight from San Diego to Dallas

San Diego will get a nonstop flight to Love Field in Dallas later this year, Southwest Airlines announced Monday.

The route will be one of 10 the airline will add to the airport near downtown Dallas beginning Nov. 2.

The additions are the result of the repeal of the federal Wright Amendment, imposed in 1979 to restrict the distance of flights from Love Field in order to favor suburban Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. It limited nonstops to Texas and eight other states. The airline will add five other routes beginning Oct. 13, the day the law named for the late Speaker of the House Jim Wright expires.

"The official repeal of Wright Amendment federal flight restrictions signifies a turning point for the Southwest brand not just in Dallas, but from coast-to-coast," said Gary Kelly, the airline's chairman, president, and CEO. "We are pleased to offer this new service to the customers of our home airport, who have waited 34 long years, and we thank the many, many folks who made this opportunity a reality."

The proximity of Love Field to downtown Dallas is similar to that of Lindbergh Field to downtown San Diego. By contrast, the much larger DFW airport is halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth.

The airline said specific flight schedules and fares will be announced in May. Nonstops from airports in Los Angeles and Orange County to Love Field will also begin Nov. 2.
