The Counter Closes Suddenly

The Counter in the Carlsbad Forum on the border of Encinitas has taken down all signs and whited out the windows. We've reached out to the custom burger restaurant to see why they closed the Carlsbad location. A location at the San Diego airport recently opened.

What would you like to see go in that spot? Tell us in comments.

I had a conversation with a "Business Turn-a-round" expert a couple of years ago and the conversation of why so many restaurants go out of business in the Encinitas area came up. His response was that there are way too many eating establishments for our small population and he is always surprised by the lack of research in demographics/traffic/population studies by new owners. We used to be the Flower Capital of the World, now it seems Encinitas is the failed restaurant capital instead! It also does not help when landlord's charge outrageous rents along with "triple net" charges. It makes it almost impossible to profitably run any business, hence the number of empty store fronts all along El Camino Real.

The Counter was formulaic and predictable and a chain. I don't understand why we keep opening up food chains with truly unmemorable food and then expect that they will thrive. Why spend the money to go out when the restaurant is a chain with mediocre food or plain crap? Support the family owned restaurants like the Greek American Restaurant and Q'ero and and Yu Me Ya or similar. They are worth having in our community, and notice that they seem to have staying power. Don't bemoan the loss of another chain. Encinitas doesn't need a bazillion mediocre chain restaurants. If I am spending money on a meal, I spend it at quality, unique places, rather than in formulaic venues. Make Encinitas a great, unique food town, and people will come from all around.

100's of different restaurants have come and gone, but Borrelli's Italian Restaurant still has fantastic food at great prices and has lasted 40 years!!! I worked my way thru high school and college at Borrelli's for 7 years back in the 1970's and still love eating there 4 decades later! 760-436-1501=I still remember the phone number as we eat there so often!!

Remember, this is a shopping center where the majority of the stores are chain stores. The Forum is in Carlsbad not Encinitas. I think most shoppers would enjoy a dining option that allows you sit and relax a bit and enjoy a nice meal, and one that offers a variety of options for everyone.

The above commentors should have a meeting, talk about the ideal restaurant, put their money together, open the restaurant, and then, hopefully, get rich.

Crawford, that's a loser of a comment.

a loser of a comment is someone who comments on an individual and not the content, therefore you are the loser. and they did sell over-priced and middle of the road quality menu items.

Everything is over-priced to some people, and affordable to others. Plenty of stuff that I cannot afford, but I don't whine about it in public.
