Think You Can’t Cook? Chef Jenn Says Failure not a Menu Option

Jenn Felmley teaches at Coral Tree Farm and thinks everyone can learn to make a nice meal.

If you think you’re not capable of cooking a nice meal—consider how chef Jenn Felmley began as a toddler.

“My mom said I burnt my blanket on the stove,” Felmley said. “I always loved cooking. I didn’t hesitate. I just knew what I wanted to do.”

Felmley, who teaches classes at the local Coral Tree Farm & Nursery, said anybody can cook. They just need a little practice in the kitchen.

Felmley—who earned her bachelor’s in culinary arts and nutrition from Johnson & Wales University—said “it’s not you.”

“Find a recipe that you like and make it repeatedly. Change out 1-2 ingredients each time and explore within your comfort zone,” she said.

Felmley also teaches at Great News in Pacific Beach and SeaRocket Bistro in North Park—and said she knew at an early age she wanted to become a chef.

Now Felmley, who is inspired by chefs such as Paul McCabe and Jamie Oliver, teaches about 20-25 people per class. Those who attend her class at the Coral Tree will see a portion of the earnings go toward maintaining the farm.

Felmley’s next class will be at 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 12. Cost is $38. For more information, visit chefjenncooks.com
