Council Votes to Add Three Firefighters to Olivenhain Station

Presently, the stationed is being manned by firefighters from other stations, who work overtime, leading to what Deputy Chief Mike Daigle called "employee burnout," according to the newspaper.

Reversing a decision from last month, the Encinitas City Council voted Wednesday to approve the hiring of three full-time firefighters for the recently-opened mini-station in Olivenhain.

According to Coast News, the station, which was approved for a lease last year, will transition from a 12-hour station to one opened all day and all night in the next few weeks.

Presently, the stationed is being manned by firefighters from other stations, who work overtime, leading to what Deputy Chief Mike Daigle called "employee burnout," according to the newspaper.

“Fire season is coming up,” Daigle told the council. “We have to anticipate that. We have to look at the condition of our fire personnel.”

According to Coast News, the new positions will add about $24,000 net to the department's operating budget, after the costs of reduced overtime hours are offset.

The mini-station is located on Rancho Santa Fe Road.
