ECC 4th-Graders Shave Heads to Support Friend with Cancer

"I was astonished that they did this for me. It was amazing just knowing that I have all my friends there."

El Camino Creek fourth-grader Travis Selinka, 10, was recently treated for brain cancer with seven weeks of radiation therapy in Houston and lost his hair.

About a dozen of his classmates shaved their heads Thursday at All American Barber Shop so that he wouldn't be the only one with a bald head at school.

"I was astonished that they did this for me," Travis said. "It was amazing just knowing that I have all my friends there."

His mother, Lynne, said Travis wanted to return to school, but was nervous about going back without hair. Like her son, she was struck by the gesture of his friends.

"These are 10- and 11-year-olds doing it for their friend," she said. "You don't hear of that. That's something that a 15-year-old would do."

With so many bare heads, the boys will also support each other. Such is the case for Walter Trostler, 9, who said he had doubts about shaving his head.

"I feel comfortable that I'm not the only one who's bald," he said, "and that I did it for him—for Travis."

What a great group of young men! It's heartwarming to see such compassion at such a young age. Kudos to the boys and praying for good health for Travis!

Bravo, boys! You've given a lesson in friendship to all of us. Here's to solidarity, friends, kindness, and beating cancer.
