Letter: With Prop A, Encinitas Citizens Keep Control of Development

The State of California, in its infinite wisdom, is trying to force local jurisdictions like the City of Encinitas into major upzoning scenarios where we have a huge commercial/residential mixed development in the middle of our City.

The State wants to take away our right as citizens to decide how we develop our neighborhoods and turn them into a Mini-Metropolis. A couple of years ago the citizens of Encinitas banded together and decided to say NO to this type of development, which was planned for El Camino Real.

The new development would have created 3000+ new residents, 1255 new apartments, traffic gridlock, increased pollution, school overcrowding and lower property values.  The citizens of Encinitas stood up together to voice their opposition to the State mandated Mini-Metropolis and City Council listened.

This project/general plan update stopped dead in its tracks.  The citizens of Encinitas did not stop there.  We gathered over 8,500 signatures to get Proposition A on the ballot and it is scheduled for a special election on Tuesday June 18th.

The real reason you need to vote Yes on Prop A is that it keeps control of development in the hands of the citizens, where it belongs, and it makes it much harder for the State to force feed us into becoming a Mini-Metropolis instead of a laid-back local beach community.
