A wrong-way driver from Carlsbad is identified as the victim in a deadly three-car collision.

Updated at 11 a.m. May 26 with victim ID and details:

A 23-year-old golf academy student from Portugal was killed and two other people injured Thursday evening in a three-car crash in Leucadia.

The collision happened just before 7 p.m. on Leucadia Boulevard at Garden View Road, said Lt. Clayton Lisk of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Joao Rocadas, 23, of Carlsbad was driving east on Leucadia Boulevard in a Chrysler Sebring when he jumped the center median into westbound traffic and collided head on with a Chevrolet pickup driven by a 43-year-old woman.

That impact caused the pickup to collide with a Ford F250 in the westbound No. 2 lane. The Ford was driven by a 43-year-old man who had his 12- and 9-year-old sons with him. The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Ford and his two sons were treated at the scene and released.

Rocadas was treated at the scene by paramedics but later pronounced dead.

Richard Iorio, director of the Golf Academy of America's Carlsbad campus told U-T San Diego that Rocadas finished a round of golf shortly before the crash. Rocadas was a new student at the Golf Academy of America and was well-liked, Iorio told the newspaper.

Deputies weren't certain if speed or alcohol were factors in the accident. They are looking for tips on the case.

Anyone with information can call the Sheriff's Department's non-emergency line at 858-565-5200.
