Nearly 100 Encinitans Participate in 20th Annual Carlsbad Marathon

Among some 10,000 runners, 94 were Encinitans.

With the Pacific Ocean surf and sand as the backdrop, some 10,000 people took to the streets Sunday morning to run in the . The 20th annual event drew people from 46 states, 12 foreign countries, and 94 Encinitans.

The elite runners started the day in the dark.  The 26.2 mile marathon race kicked off at 6 a.m. By 7:30 a.m., the group of 8,500 half-marathon runners began to make their way down Carlsbad Boulevard for their 13.1 mile race. There were not many seasoned runners in this pack—most were novices pushing themselves to complete a challenge that takes discipline and physical endurance.

Cheering wasn't enough to get some past the finish line. Out of the 10,000 who started, the official count was 8,183 people who finished. Some 7,019 of those ran the half and 1,164 finished the full marathon.
