Video Footage from Encinitas Red Light Cameras Used for Crash Investigations, Sheriff's Captain Tells Council

Sheriff's Captain Robert Haley briefed the Encinitas City Council about the red light program during a staff presentation.

Captain Robert Haley, of the San Diego Sheriff's Department Encinitas Station, spoke to the City Council Wednesday about the red light program. He showed his support even though he was ticketed by one in Escondido. He said he feels the fees (currently at $490 dollars) for failing to stop are too high.

He also mentioned that those with tickets may go into the station to review the still images and video footage. The cameras do take video and that footage is used for accident investigations, he added.

The presentation was part of an agenda item in which staff presented a report to the City Council on the red light program. The council did not vote on the status of the program Wednesday. Staff had recommended the council provide direction on the program to staff, but council members did not provide input after the presentation.

The full staff report is available online on the City of Encinitas website.
