Native North Americans and their Diverse Forms of Governance
In this election year and in honor of Native American History Month, Dr. Lynne Miller will talk about different Native North American cultures and their diverse systems of government. Cultural groups to be addressed include the Iroquois Confederacy, considered by many historians to be the inspiration for our own system of representative government; the Powhatan Confederacy, which developed a much more totalitarian form of rule; the Natchez, which was North America’s last remaining aristocracy; and egalitarian systems such as members of the Pueblo and Plains cultures.
