Encinitas flash mob assembles in front of the Surfing Madonna mosaic to show community support for the soon-to-be-removed artwork.

A peaceful flash mob paraded down Coast Highway 101 today, then assembled under a train pass in front of the Surfing Madonna mosaic in an effort to show community support for the doomed artwork.

Sanctioned as graffiti by the City of Encinitas, artist Mark Patterson’s exquisite mural depicts a surfing Madonna and save the ocean messaging. Supporters dressed in veils and wore Surfing Madonna t-shirts (available at the in Encinitas) while singing a modified Beach Boys melody:

“...Come on save the Surfin Madonna, Let’s all save the Surfin Madonna...”

Local mosaic artist Terry Oshrin called the work wonderful and stated, “Anything that makes us different than any other city on the coast is fabulous.”

Patterson envisioned the mural as a blessing to the community. Whether or not the work boosts tourism and brings joy to visitors and locals alike, the controversial mural's days are numbered.
