Record Turnout for Leucadia 101 Main Street’s Annual Community Update

The Leucadia 101 Main Street Association’s Annual Community Update posted a record level of attendance this past week with more than 60 residents, community members, local business merchants and City of Encinitas officials attending the meeting held at Paul Ecke Elementary School in Leucadia.

The long planned for and anxiously awaited Leucadia “Streetscape Plan” for Hwy 101, approved in 2010 and now in the permitting stage prior to final plans being made and of Phase I construction, was clearly the hot topic of the evening and garnered the majority of questions from the audience. “Everyone looks forward to seeing a more walkable and bikeable Leucadia,” said Leucadia 101 board member, local Realtor and 25 year resident Elena Thompson, “not to mention the beautification of our Highway 101 corridor along with traffic calming measures to slow down the cars.”  Diane Langager, Senior Planner from the City of Encinitas in charge of the Streetscape project also spoke and provided an updated time-line on the approved plan. Also present were council members Jerome Stocks and Mark Muir and Patrick Murphy, head of Planning for the City.

Peder Norby, The City of Encinitas Highway 101 Coordinator and chief advocate for the Leucadia 101 Main Street Association, Encinitas 101 Main Street Association (formerly DEMA) and Cardiff 101 Main Street Associations, spoke about the resurgence of business along Highway 101 in Leucadia now that the Streetscape is “coming soon.” New Leucadia businesses on Hwy 101 including Dos Palmas Mexican Bakery & Grill, Café Ipe, Haggos Organic Taco, HapiFish, and Pandora’s Pizza and the soon to arrive Costa Azul Boutique Winery and Tasting Room were heralded for their investment and confidence in the area.  After decades of little to no growth along this former official Highway and Leucadia’s “Main Street,” things are looking up in Leucadia, Norby inferred.

The Leucadia 101 Main Street Association is non-profit organization with a 15- member volunteer board that is dedicated to the historic preservation and revitalization of Leucadia’s North Highway 101 corridor as part of the California Main Street Association (www.californiamainstreet.ca.gov). Leucadia 101’s community promotional activities includes: the highly popular LeucadiArt Walk, planned for August 12, 2012;  the weekly Leucadia Farmers Market; Summer Fun on the 101 Music Festival, planned for June 29&230;  and other events and programs, are organized and sponsored year round by Leucadia 101 Main Street Association.
