John Joseph Maxwell— an aeronautical design engineer who worked on the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space missions—died March 9 at his Encinitas home, according to an obituary in the North County Times.
He was 93.
“His favorite pastimes were fishing, hunting, tennis, bowling, soccer and bridge,” said the obituary. “His nickname was ‘Airplane Granddad’ because he always visited his grandchildren in Georgia for three weeks twice a year from California.”
Services were set for noon Saturday, March 24, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Encinitas.
