Poll: Do You Miss the Local Newspaper That Once Served Your Community?

U-T San Diego takeover of North County Times is latest shakeout of smaller county dailies.

Another quake hit the media landscape Tuesday when U-T San Diego’s owners of the North County Times. It was a reminder of how many local papers have folded, including the Encinitas Coast-Dispatch, The Vista Press, La Mesa Scout, Lemon Grove Review, El Cajon Californian and San Dieguito Citizen. U-T columnist Logan Jenkins recalled the old Oceanside Blade-Citizen and Escondido Times Advocate, and wrote: “In the sparsely populated aquarium of daily newspapers, they’ve survived for 16 years but now they’ve been devoured and now what?” What paper do you miss?

What makes you think that this is an effort to build anti Romney sentiment? How do you know that reporters don't do this with all press conferences they report on? Why hasn't anyone brought up that possibility? Oh, that's right.... because then it wouldn't fit into your notion of liberal media bias.
Russel Ray September 13, 2012 at 02:27 pm
Hey, Steve. Actually there is an East County section on Thursdays. It's sitting on my desk right now. However it's lame compared to the past, and it is now called "U-T Local."
Steve Dolan September 13, 2012 at 02:34 pm
Russell, all other areas of the county (North, South, etc.) get an entire section devoted to their area on Thursdays. We don't get a separate section. All we get is an advertiser inside the local B section.
Russel Ray September 13, 2012 at 02:39 pm
I know it's nothing like it used to be, but my Section B this morning has East County stuff on B2, B3,, B4, B5, B6, and B7.
Also, my in-laws in Vista tell me that they no longer have a "North County" section either. It's a "U-T Local" section with north county stuff in it just like our east county Local section.

NCT was having problems, they shut down a printing plant a number of months ago, let people go ... only 75k subscribers ... My guess it would fold sooner rather than later ... The UT with its resources, taking the best parts of NCT and creating a UT North County Edition seems like the thing to do. I received a very lengthly survey from them, what I like and don't like about both papers ... took about 15 minutes to get through it ..
We do have plenty of online local news, we have the Coast papers ....

Don't like to see North County Times go to Manchester. He, and the Lincoln (the car, not the human being) Club act like a fast-moving cancer in their 24/7 quest to dominate news, business and government in SoCal.
The U-T editorial board, and Manchester himself, are obviously sick, as their writings thus far could only be equated with projectile vomiting. We all have many strongly-held personal views on issues, but Mr. Manchester's editorials have entered a new dimension I am glad to tell readers that my opponent in the new US House D-50, Congressman Duncan Hunter II, will be receiving the endorsement of Mr. Manchester and his organ. Were there to be some incredible typographical error showing the U-T endorsing my candidacy, I would reject it immediately. In fact, I believe (editorial) any candidate for any office in San Diego County, regardless of party, that shares the extremist views of Manchester and accepts a U-T endorsement, is not worthy of the office he/she seeks.
Jay Berman September 13, 2012 at 04:02 pm
What is all this hate toward Manchester ? A sucessful business man, he develped some very nice projects ... runs hotels, provides many jobs in San Diego ... He invested heavy in a dying industry, newspapers ... probably saved NCTR from going belly up - if you don't like him, his properties or businesses, don't use them ... continue to get your new from Media Matters, DailyKOS, HuffPost et al .. you know .. all those sources funded by George Soros ..

Manchester or anyone else is allowed to make a profit, but it's dangerous when pro-development interests buy up all local newspapers. As suggested, we don't have to read them.
I've read a few good pieces in the UT from the Watchdog, though not lately; many read the UT more for local news. I appreciate UT's news blog (similar to this one) which follows news articles, where we can post comments, thru facebook. That being said, I will miss North County Times, & I do miss the old Coast Dispatch, & papers that came before. While competition is usually excellent for the consumer, the competition of the internet & sound bite TV is mostly what did papers in, with falling circulation. A big factor probably was we could get our news elsewhere & didn't want to deal with all the newspapers piling up. This probably saves trees. Yet, I'm dismayed we don't have more local investigative reporters. We truly rely on the media to be a "4th branch," along with local activists & watchdogs, as our City government becomes so insulated, without true separation of powers, acting as judge, jury & executioner, or judicial, legislative & executive branches all rolled into one. The North County Times, at one time, had excellent reporters who would attend Council Meetings, take photos, & follow thru on leads & news articles. A miniscule % of people participate by attending Council Meetings. We rely on the media to inform us! Bottomline, desire for profit shouldn't filter the news!
LG Joe September 13, 2012 at 07:13 pm
The U-T may have a comments section, but they delete comments frequently. It is well known to those who were (or are) active in replying to stories that since Manchester took over the paper, dozens of comments vanish daily. People like me don’t bother to read or comment on their stories anymore.
For years, the Union-Tribune called itself “the ring of truth.” No more and it shows.
Lynn Marr September 13, 2012 at 07:16 pm
The UT had some excellent editorials, in the past, questioning Encinitas Council Members about their lack of transparency, about their not following the Brown Act, to the letter, according to the intent of State Legislators. But when it came down to making political endorsements, management didn't follow the lead of editorial staff.
Political endorsements are a big power that newspapers & local news magazines, such as SD City Beat have. But here, in this forum, I don't see why this has to be another, bitter, partisan debate. Conservatives, liberals & moderates should all want objective news sources, so that we can form our own conclusions, not have our decisions & choices "spoon-fed" to us by those that would "sell" their version of the truth, for profit. If someone doesn't have an open mind, & a real sense of integrity, then he or she, whether he owns the medium, or whether she's just a concerned citizen, attempting to consider the facts as well as opinion on "all sides" of a question, will already have his mind stuck in the rut of foregone conclusions & pre-formed opinions. It takes more than information & knowledge to be wise. One must be able to understand & process information one takes in, weighing it, & deciding what IS factual, & what is mere propaganda, that is opinion tweaked & manipulated into twisted, distorted facts. I don't trust the UT, now, to be an unbiased source of news. Manchester is doing himself a favor, not us. I'm grateful for the Patch!

I want to share something about my cancelling my UT subscription (which was Sunday only). The person I talked to seemed crestfallen and weary. I guess they've had a lot of cancellations. The customer service rep asked me specifically if I was cancelling because of an editorial on Sept. 7. I didn't read the UT on that day, but I am wondering if that's what the boiling point was for other readers.
Lynn Marr September 13, 2012 at 07:27 pm
LG Joe, I get so disgruntled when comments get removed for political reasons. Some comments are so hateful, and violate policy, I can understand why someone would flag them as inappropriate, but when whole sections are removed, that's taking censorship too far.
Of course, there has to be some balance between freedom of speech and causing injury to others, but it seems as though actually removing groups of comments should be rare. I have found that sometimes comments don't show up as they are on "Page 1" of the comments, and I've been taken, by default, to Page 2. Or someone, like a Council candidate, here in Encinitas, could have removed my comments through her own facebook page. Yet when I went to the article through my own link, on my own facebook page (my own timeline), my comment, which I thought had been deleted, was still there. I've also seen where people had deleted their own comments from the "main article" page, but I could still see them through my own facebook page link, if I had replied to a particular comment. Facebook's "protocol" can make finding previous comments confusing!
Lynn Marr September 13, 2012 at 07:35 pm
So true, Chris. I am so grateful we still have the Coast News! I do rely on it for local news more than any other newspaper!
My comments, below, are meant to be directed toward daily newspapers. I hold the owners and the editorial staff of the Coast News in high regard. I hope the Coast News remains financially solvent, and that people will come to realize the value of the Coast News as a local newspaper, even more, with the demise of the NCT. and the lack of more objective local daily news reporting.
Joe St. Lucas September 13, 2012 at 07:50 pm
I'm not sure what freedom of speech has to do w. comments being deleted, or am I reading this wrong? Freedom of speech says that if I want to create and pay for a website to host my blog, I can say "almost" any darn thing that I want on it, short of threatening violence against someone.
Posting comments on the U-T website, or most any other, is subject to the whims of the people who are PAYING for the webservice. You really have no rights to having comments kept there when someone else is paying for it. It'd be really nice if a newspaper was open minded enough to allow controversal posts to remain, but if they don't want them, they have every right to purge them.
Russel Ray September 13, 2012 at 08:12 pm
Hmmm. I don't remember the September 7 editorial, but that happens to be the same date that I decided to start looking for other news sources in preparation for canceling my subscription. I'm thinking it's not a coincidence.........lol

The boiling point?
Full-page ads, rumored to be free or at a steep discount, for the Mormon produced hit-piece on Obama, 2016. (Yes both the prodcuer and the distributor are Mormon, and yes (religion) it does make a difference when the LDS pumps so much money and resources into politics.) For every one letter with a democratic slant, the U-T publishes six with their conservative slant. Deleting comments posted about their stories. Leaving comments that support their (Manchester’s) viewpoint. Firing good reporters and writers and keeping the “yes men” type journalists. The new room used to have some independence, now it’s obvious it has none.
F. Dunn September 13, 2012 at 08:54 pm
LG, Thanks. I don't really want to say anything else about my call to customer service because I don't want any working people in the call center to lose their jobs. But I can say that I was told that people in CS were distressed not just about the cancellations but about how strident the coverage has been.
Kevin George September 13, 2012 at 09:01 pm
I cannot imagine a worse job than customer service at the UT.
Sort of like being a PR guy for Satan. No matter their shifting political slant their customer service has always been the worst on the planet.
Rob September 17, 2012 at 01:59 pm
The U.T. has me back as a reader...I love their Conservative slant...they're more objective...and have excellent editorials from Roger Hedgecock, Krauthammer and other very smart Leaders...Too much of the Media protects, aids and abets Sham Wow, Captain Crunch the economy Obama and his Motley, Marxist Pirate crew...They will be walkin' the Plank soon..!

Kevin, I didn't even know till today (following a link to a Voice of San Diego article) that UT's customer service isn't even in California. It's somewhere in the Midwest.

Prop A will help residents and stop greedy developers from buying city council. Vote YES
Rick Moore June 18, 2013 at 09:27 am
I wholeheartedly agree with the recommendation that folks read the initiative. When you readRead More sections 6 and 9, you will see that Prop A sets a 30-foot or 2-story ceiling across the entire city, overriding lower height limits in many areas. The Downtown Specific Plan limits residences to 22-26 feet, as detailed on the DEMA website, so Prop A would actually allow the building of taller homes. It makes no exemptions or allowances for historic buildings like La Paloma, church towers or other structures over 30 feet high; the only exceptions are medical complexes and public high schools (see clause 6.2). Rebuilding or renovating (more than 50%) would require expensive public votes. Should the SRF be required to pay for an election to rebuild the Lotus Tower? Such contingencies are allowed for in our Historic Overlay Zone, which would clearly be overridden by Prop A. So is the Encinitas Preservation Association's plan to convert one of the boathouses to a museum. Again, Prop A would require an election (see section 4.1, clause e), which the EPA cannot afford. Prop A would thus favor large developers who have the money, time, lawyers and other resources to campaign for their project. How many nonprofits and small businessmen can afford to spend a minimum $30,000 just to get their project on a general election ballot (upwards of $300,000 for a special election like this one)? Yes, folks, please read the initiative, especially Section 9, which lays waste to anything that conflicts with it. That's why this has been dubbed Propzilla. I trust that most Encinitas citizens are smart enough to see that this meausre is deeply flawed, problematic and counter-productive. We can find much better ways to limit growth and preserve community character.

CardiffCreature June 4, 2013 at 10:44 am
Prop A will not control growth. It will make sure that BOTH the council and the public get toRead More directly weigh in on the deals being brokered between big developers and the city. This won't end the indirect developer subsidies, but it sure will help.
Lynn Marr June 6, 2013 at 02:26 am
Yes, it will help to slow growth, by making sure that the public approves raising height limits orRead More upzoning, for developments over the parameters of a MAXIMUM of 30 ft. and two stories. Lower set height limits will not be repealed, because they are not in conflict with the initiative or the General Plan. David Ahlgren's fear and speculation is not backed up by one single fact. He just raises the usual building industry "mantra" of alleged risks created by unnamed "unintended consequences." Council's attempt at a preemptive ordinance does NOT guarantee that will be placed on the ballot in 2014, and does NOT eliminate other loopholes such as the "less-than-5-acre" exception, the "categorization of intensity of use" exception, and the height limit exception. The only loophole that Council's drafted ordinance affects is Council's ability to vote by a 4/5 supermajority on upzoing if it is done with respect to a "significant public benefit." Not only is Council's recently drafted ordinance NOT guaranteed, in that a future Council could reverse it, if it is not enacted through a public vote, but also Council's attempt at preempting the "right to vote on upzoning and raising height limits initiative" DOESN"T eliminate the other loopholes that still exist in our General Plan, Policy 3.12., which exceptions I've spelled out, here.
