Issue: If Encinitas OKs Prop. A, Should Other Towns Follow in Planning Footsteps?

Encinitas voters Tuesday go to the polls to decide whether a majority vote of residents will be needed to make major planning decisions. Zoning changes traditionally have been in the hands of an appointed committee and the City Council.

Proponents say Prop. A is needed because the council hasn't listened to the public on height limits and development density. Opponents point to added election costs, lawsuit exposure and a chill on new business.

If Prop. A passes, will other towns feel the urge to pursue similar measures? Or will this vote be regarded as NIMBYs gone wild?
