Photos: Fire Destroys Home on Crest Drive

The family who lived in the house narrowly escaped the blaze.

A large fire broke out Tuesday morning at a house in the 180 block of Crest Drive, near Birmingham, sending smoke into the air that could seen for miles.

The family living in the house, two adults and three children, was able to escape the blaze without injury.

The fire started on the first floor right after 6:30 a.m. and quickly engulfed the second story, acoording to firefighters.

After the second story collapsed, firefighters ensured other homes in the area wouldn't be damaged by water runoff from the firefighting efforts.

The damage to the home, which is now a total loss, is estimated at $400,000 to $700,000 according to firefighters.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
