Checkpoint in Encinitas Results in 9 DUI Arrests

The checkpoint on Olivenhain Road is a part of the Avoid the 14 campaign against drunken driving.

The San Diego Sheriff's Department conducted a DUI and driver's license checkpoint in the 1800 block of Olivenhain Road Saturday night, part of a crackdown on drunken driving during the Super Bowl weekend.

According to the Sheriff's Department, nine drivers were arrested for suspicion of DUI, including two repeat offenders, one arrest was made for drug possession and 34 vehicles were impounded. Of the 1,891 vehicles that drove through the checkpoint, 1,217 were contacted during the primary inspection and 77 were sent to a secondary inspection.

Other citations issued at the checkpoint include 24 for driving without a license, five for driving with a suspended or revoked license, and three provisional drivers were cited.

The San Diego County Avoid the 14 DUI Task Force deployed special patrols for the Super Bowl weekend targeting drunken drivers, funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety. The Super Bowl weekend last year resulted in 135 DUI arrests in San Diego County and one DUI-related death.
