A suspected drunken driver was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries early Sunday morning after her SUV rolled over on Olivenhain Road, according to the Sheriff’s Department. The driver was the only person in the SUV and no other vehicles were involved.

Zoraida Balderas, 23, was driving a Ford Expedition westbound just past Amargosa Drive around 4:07 a.m. when she lost control and drove into the eastbound lanes, according to Sgt. Anthony O’Boyle.

The SUV jumped over the curb in the eastbound lane, hit a retaining wall and a tree, then rolled over onto its side, according to O’Boyle. Balderas was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the SUV.

Balderas suffered serious facial and internal injuries and was taken by helicopter to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, where doctors said she is expected to survive, according to O’Boyle. She was arrested for suspicion of DUI and remains in the hospital.
