Encinitas Driver Dies After Crashing into Tow Truck

The driver reportedly traveled at a high rate of speed, according to a CHP officer.

An Encinitas man died Tuesday after crashing into a flatbed tow truck in San Juan Capistrano.

The 64-year-old man who was driving a Lexus RX 350 was traveling at a high rate of speed when it ran into the flatbed tow truck at about 10:50 a.m. just south of Ortega Highway, according to CHP Officer Chris Goodwin.

The driver of the tow truck, a 41-year-old man from Garden Grove, was transported to Mission Hospital with minor injuries, Goodwin said.

The accident forced the California Highway Patrol to close all northbound I-5 lanes at one point, but traffic was flowing at about 2 p.m., said Goodwin.
