Encinitas Fire Department Warns Residents About Burn Victim Scam

Be suspicous of phone and mail solictors claiming fire service affliations.

The following is from the City of Encinitas Fire Department's facebook page:

Recently, citizens residing in Encinitas contacted the fire department to express concerns regarding phone and mail solicitation for credit card or cash donations which would in turn be given to fire victims or burn centers. These donations were requested by an organization claiming to represent the fire service in general. Please Note: Phone and mail solicitors are not connected to any local fire department or in general the fire service. The Encinitas Fire Department recommends that citizens do not donate money or goods to phone or mail solicitors claiming any type of fire service affiliation.

It’s important to Know: a local Fire Department, Fire District Association, Burn Institute or Burn Survivor charity who conducts fund raising for charitable causes; will typically do so through special events such as pancake breakfast, fire station dinner or similar event, where people gather in public engage in person to person contact. Please exercise caution when asked to donate to any fire or burn safety affiliated charities who solicit via phone or mail. When in doubt we recommend you contact your local law enforcement agency. Thank you.
