Four Arrested at DUI Checkpoint

Deputies stopped cars on Highway 101, looking for impaired drivers.

Law-enforcement agencies throughout San Diego County are aggressively looking for drunken drivers this holiday weekend, including the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies from the conducted a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint in the 400 block of Highway 101 in Solana Beach Friday night, searching for impaired drivers and other violations, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Drivers were screened from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m.

Of the 582 vehicles that drove through the checkpoint, 439 were contacted by a deputy and evaluated, according to a sheriff’s report. Deputies directed 16 vehicles to a secondary-inspection area where 10 drivers were given a field sobriety test, with four being arrested for suspicion of DUI, said Deputy Brenda Wiebe.

No other arrests were reported from the checkpoint, but four citations were issued and eight vehicles impounded, according to Wiebe.

The checkpoint was part of Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest., a national crackdown led by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. The detail was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the NHTSA.
