Updated: How the Power Outage Affects Encinitas Today

Here's how yesterday's 'unprecedented' electricity outage affects Encinitas today.

Power has been restored to all 1.4 million customers after yesterday's outage, which was caused by a major power disturbance when a 500,000 volt line in central Arizona failed. The disturbance was felt at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and the plant was shut down as a safety measure.

Here's a quick rundown of how yesterday's power outage has impacted us here in Encinitas.

  • Cardif, Encinitas and San Deguito schools will be closed on Friday. San Diego City College, Mesa College, Miramar College, Continuing Education, and the District Office will also be closed today.
  • North County Transit will operate on a reduced schedule.
  • The city of Encinitas joined forces with Solana Beach and Del Mar to create a  and worked through the night. City hall will be open Friday.
  • The Downtown Encinitas Mainstreet Association's (DEMA) that had been scheduled for Thursday night has been rescheduled for next Thursday, Sept. 15.
  • Beaches north of Scripps Pier through Del Mar and Solana Beach . As a result of the power outage, an estimated 3.2 million gallons of sewage spilled from the San Diego Metropolitan Wastewater System into the Los Penasquitos Lagoon.
  • Though power has been restored,. Some business, including , will have delayed openings due to ongoing complications with its cash registered.
