‘Military Ordnance’ Found on Cardiff Beach; Bomb Unit Safely Removes Item

A walk on the beach turned up what looked like an explosive device.

A section of Cardiff State Beach was evacuated Sunday afternoon after lifeguards were alerted to an item found along the shoreline that looked like an explosive device, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The bomb/arson unit responded and took the device away to be disposed off, according to Sgt. Roberto Lopez. The device was described by authorities as “undetermined military ordnance.” It was safely removed and nobody was injured.

A person walking on the beach found the device around 1 p.m., picked it up and placed it in the sand by lifeguard tower No. 15, according to Lopez. When lifeguards were alerted to the device they called the Sheriff’s Department.
