A surfer's report of seeing an 8- to 10-foot shark in the breakers at Beacons Beach prompted authorities to advise people to stay out of the water this afternoon.
The man told lifeguards shortly before 3 p.m. that a great white shark approached and circled him in about five feet of water, Encinitas Marine Safety Capt. Larry Giles said.
“We found his information to be credible,” Giles said. “The guy definitely had an encounter with a shark.'”
Crews evacuated the immediate area, then began making announcements via loudspeakers and “face-to-face,” advising beachgoers to avoid the surf in the area for the time being, according to Giles.
Lifeguards planned to continue issuing the warnings for the remainder of the day. Sightings of great whites off the coast of northern San Diego County are “pretty rare,” Giles said.
