Sheriff's Blotter: Burglars Target Vehicles, Homes

Items of note from the desk of the Encinitas station of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department as of Feb. 1, 2011.

  • Multiple vehicle break-ins were reported on Via de Caballo on Jan. 28. A 29-year-old victim told deputies two vehicles were vandalized—the victim reported damage to a station wagon and SUV around 8 a.m. No items were reported missing.  In a separate report, tools were  stolen from a vehicle on the same street on the same date. In that case, the 55-year-old victim discovered the items missing around 9:30 a.m. The tools were valued at $200. No suspect information was reported in either case.
  • On Ranch Road, two separate reports of burglaries were taken within 24 hours. A couple in their 30s reported the theft of cash and jewelry from their home on the evening of Jan. 28. The call was reported as a residential burglary in progress at 6:27 p.m., according to a summary. The couple reported the loss of cash, papers and jewelry with a total value at $19,000.  On the morning of Jan. 29, furniture was reported stolen from a home on the same street by a 53-year-old victim. The man valued the furniture at $300. No suspect information was listed in either case.
  • On Burgundy Road, five people reported losing items in vehicle burglaries on Jan. 27. Three victims in a combined report told deputies a thief or thieves stole miscellaneous items such as a duffle bag, backpack, computer and electronic equipment with a total value of $955. The items were discovered missing around 6 a.m. A 65-year-old man noticed items missing from a vehicle on the same road during the sometime frame. The victim reported vehicle damage in addition to the loss of auto parts and other miscellaneous items with a value of $2,600.  A victim whose name was withheld also reported their vehicle burglarized on Burgundy Road on Jan. 27. The victim reported the theft of computer terminals, checks, books and other personal items valued at more than $1,100. No suspect information was listed.
  • A building on Pleasantdale Drive was burglarized on Jan. 28. The 56-year-old victim reported the theft shortly after 4 a.m. of a computer, tools and a document similar to a will. The total value of the items was set at $800.
  • A vehicle was burglarized on Hygeia Avenue on Jan. 28. The 70-year-old victim reported the incident shortly before 9 a.m. The victim lost a cellular phone, credit cards and a purse. No suspect information was listed.
  • A vehicle was burglarized on Gascony Road Jan. 28. The call for assistance came around 9:30 a.m. The 22-year-old victim reported the loss of athletic equipment, a portable music player and sun glasses with a total value of $500.
  • A vehicle was vandalized on 3rd Street during the morning of Jan 27. The 71-year-old victim reported a broken car window. The damage was set at $250. No suspect information was reported.
  • A 36-year-old man was arrested after a foot chase near A Street and 4th Street on  Jan. 27. The call for assistance was issued around 4:45 p.m. and the suspect was caught around 6:30 p.m. Treggon Owens was issued a citation for obstructing a peace officer, a misdemeanor, before being released without further incident, according to the report.
  • A 41-year-old woman reported the theft of two bicycles from a building on La Mirada Avenue on the afternoon of Jan. 27. The bicycles, the first of which was described only as turquoise and black in color and the second, as red and black, were discovered missing around noon. No suspect information was reported.
  • A juvenile was detained on Union Street on the afternoon of Jan. 26 after being found in possession of smoking paraphernalia. The unidentified minor was held around 2:44 p.m. and released at 3:20 p.m, according to the report. The matter is being handled within the department.
  • A juvenile was detained near the intersection of Cerro Street and Taegan Lane on the afternoon of Jan. 26 following a complaint of reckless driving.  The juvenile, whose name and age were not released, was detained on suspicion of possessing 28.5 grams or less of marijuana shortly after 4 p.m. The incident is being handled via juvenile court and no arrest was made, according to the report.
  • A vehicle was burglarized near the intersection of San Elijo Avenue and Montgomery Avenue on the afternoon of Jan. 23. The 30-year-old victim reported the loss of ID and an ATM card, sunglasses and music equipment with a total value of $1,500. No suspect information was listed.
