Weekend DUI Check Point on Olivenhain Rd. Warrants 3 Arrests

From Sept. 7-8 at 8 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. deputies from the Encinitas Sheriff's Station conducted a DUI/Driver License checkpoint as part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.

The checkpoint was held in the 1800 block of Olivenhain Road in Encinitas.

A total of 1606 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. Fifty-four vehicles were directed to the secondary screening area for further investigation.

Three arrests were made; two of the arrests were for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Field sobriety tests conducted on three additional drivers suspected of driving under the influence showed, although the drivers had been drinking, they were under the legal limit of .08% blood alcohol content.

Twenty-one drivers were cited. Eleven of the citations were for unlicensed drivers; one for driving on a suspended driver license; and, four juvenile drivers were cited for probationary driver license violations.

Seven vehicles were impounded during the operation.

The purpose of the checkpoint was to remove impaired and/or unlicensed drivers from the roadway, public education, and deterrence to increase the safety of all drivers. Funding for this operation was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
