City Shows Award for Fire Safety, Taxpayer Savings

Area fire districts received the regional Golden Watchdog & Fleece Award for improving public safety while saving over $1 million in one year.

At its regular meeting Wednesday night, the Encinitas City Council showed an award the city received from state Sen. Mark Wyland and the San Diego County Taxpayers Association.

The Encinitas, Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Rancho Santa Fe fire districts received the regional Golden Watchdog & Fleece Award for a personnel-sharing contract that has improved public safety and saved taxpayer dollars.

Deputy Mayor Jerome Stocks had attended the May 20 ceremony to accept the award on behalf of the city. Wyland issued a printed recognition which praised the saving of one million taxpayer dollars in 2009, the first year of the contract.

Councilwoman Maggie Houlihan wondered where the recognition and trophy would stay. “Since we submitted it, we'll probably accept it,” said Wyland.
