San Diego County has several innovative intergenerational programs including the Intergenerational Games where older adults and elementary students are paired together in a fun, athletic competition and volunteer grandparents who live on campus and mentor foster youth at the San Pasqual Academy.

“The County offers many excellent opportunities to pair up the talent and knowledge of our older residents with the eagerness to learn exhibited by our younger generations,” said Chairman Ron Roberts of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. “It has proven to be a great two-way learning opportunity for everyone involved.”

The award was created by the MetLife Foundation and Generations United to help heighten the awareness of the importance intergenerational programs in building strong, supportive communities. The MetLife Foundation increases access and opportunities for people of all ages with grants to organizations that have a positive impact on their communities. Generations United is a membership organization focused solely on improving the lives of children, youth and older people through intergenerational activities.

“Programs that bring together residents of all ages are the cornerstone of building a healthy community that looks after all its residents,” said Nick Macchione, Director, Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). “Our Live Well, San Diego! initiative is putting on a Live Well Summit on June 15 that will explore intergenerational solutions to our most challenging community problems.”

The summit will be held at the Town and Country Club Resort in Mission Valley from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and simulcast to locations in El Cajon, Escondido, Carlsbad and Chula Vista. For more information on the event, please visit www.aisevents.org.
